Il y a 42 ans aujourd’hui (8 novembre 1980), le cinquième album de Bruce Springsteen, The River, entamait sa course de quatre semaines à la première place. L’album, qui était sorti le 17 octobre précédent, marquait le premier succès du  » Boss  » et son premier double album.
L’album est coproduit par Springsteen, son manager Jon Landau, Chuck Plotkin et Steve Van Zandt – la même équipe qui sera derrière les planches pour la collection multi-platine Born In The U.S.A. de 1984. The River a également permis à Springsteen d’obtenir son premier succès dans le Top 10, avec le premier single de l’album, « Hungry Heart » – avec les chœurs de Flo &amp ; Eddie, qui a atteint la cinquième place. Le deuxième single de l’album, la ballade « Fade Away », a atteint le numéro 20.
Les sessions pour The River ont lieu à la Power Station de Manhattan et se déroulent du 3 avril 1979 au 9 mai 1980. À un moment donné, Springsteen, persuadé d’avoir une suite à Darkness On The Edge Of Town (1978), livre à Columbia Records une collection d’un seul disque intitulée The Ties That Bind, avant de retirer l’album et d’entreprendre d’autres sessions avec le E Street Band tout au long de 1980.
En 2015, pour célébrer le 35e anniversaire de The River, Bruce Springsteen a sorti son dernier coffret, The Ties That Bind : ‘The River’ Collection. Ce coffret de quatre CD et trois DVD comprend l’intégralité du double album The River de 1980, le single original The Ties That Bind de 1979 que Springsteen avait l’intention de sortir – mais qu’il a abandonné -, deux CD complets d’outtakes – dont quelques-uns ont été publiés dans diverses collections Springsteen -, un nouveau documentaire de Thom Zimny et un DVD de concert live filmé et enregistré sur plusieurs pistes le 5 novembre 1980 à Tempe, en Arizona, ainsi que des séquences de répétitions de la production avant la tournée.
Bruce Springsteen a expliqué que pour la première fois de sa carrière, en enregistrant un double album pour The River, il a pu enfin incorporer toutes les couleurs de sa palette musicale sur vinyle : [“The River was a lot wider open. In other words, a lot of different kinds of things were going to fit. Y’know, ‘Cadillac Ranch,’ ‘Sherry Darling’ — those things were now going to fit onto the record, I decided. How I chose in the end. . . That was a record where I could’ve switched a lot of things around. A lot of things that ended up as outtakes easily could’ve made it on to the record, or I could’ve taken some things on the record off, y’know?”] (:21 OC : . . . record off y’know)
Nous avons rencontré Steve Van Zandt et l’avons interrogé sur le fait que Springsteen l’ait fait passer de simple copain et second guitariste du E Street Band à coproducteur de The River : [“At that point Bruce asked me to co-produce because it was time to make a real band album. And we had suffered the comparison between our records and our live show all along, and it was just time to fix it, y’know? It took us five albums to really figure out how to capture that live thing on record. Après les problèmes créatifs de Born To Run en 1975, et les problèmes audio entourant Darkness On The Edge Of Town en 1978, Van Zandt a insisté pour que le groupe – qui avait fait de nombreuses tournées au cours des quatre années précédentes – joue le nouveau matériel comme une seule unité plutôt que d’ajouter des parties : [“We wanted to go back to something that felt live. So, I had experimented and had somebody do some research and found a live room, which was that Power Station room. My wife (Maureen) actually recommended this guy Bob Clearmountain, who she knew, who was famous for working very quickly, y’know? So, I recommended Bob Clearmountain. And then we mic’d the thing in a way that that used the room; and that combined with certain things, like the way the drums were tuned — we got it on ‘Hungry Heart’ I remember the day we got it; we were using the overhead (mics) and I had Bob just push the overheads up higher than he’d ever push them before, ’till you heard that sound. Bruce Springsteen a expliqué dans le récent documentaire sur The River, The Ties That Bind, que certains des morceaux qui ont fait l’objet du montage final n’étaient pas particulièrement les meilleurs qu’il avait, mais plus précisément la combinaison parfaite de chansons : [“I mean, I like all the outtakes from this record, but I wanted things that represented the glorified bar band that we are; I wanted to get that stuff on, and then I had a lot of ballads. Now, the ballads were the, kind of the heart and soul of the record — ‘Point Blank,’ ‘Stolen Car,’ uh. . . ‘The River,’ ‘Independence Day’; those are the ones that are very cinematic, but they’re all slow. Un titre qui a été retenu sur The River est « Two Hearts », qui s’est transformé en un duo d’amour entre Springsteen et Van Zandt sur scène : [“Yeah, I think it’s become important in a way that I don’t think we recognized at the time. Y’know what I mean, when we cut it, it was another one of (laughs) those 75 great songs, y’know what I mean? I mean, I don’t think we were really focused on it and then we kinda made it our showcase thing between me and him through they years, y’know? (It) kinda became a thing, where. . . y’know, bigger than maybe what we had pictured when we first cut it, y’know what I mean? Nils Lofgren, guitariste de l’E Street Band, se souvient avoir été avec Springsteen le jour où il a finalement signé The River : [“This is back (in) 1980, ‘living in L.A. and at the Sunset Marquis, I kept running into Bruce, and y’know, one morning, he said, ‘We just finished mixing The River, its a double album, I’m going to listen to the latest, final mix — wanna tag along?’ And I did. He put me down in a chair between two beautiful stereo speakers and listened to the whole double album and I thought it was beautiful. I thought it was a real step forward. Some of the live stuff, they’ve always done live, which I’d seen them through the years, they brought to the record. Steve Van Zandt nous a dit qu’il était particulièrement heureux que les fans de Springsteen puissent enfin entendre ce qu’il considère comme l’une des meilleures musiques que le E Street Band ait jamais enregistrées : [“Every single outtake on The River was a lost argument. I was fighting for every single one of ‘em, y’know? I mean, he wrote, basically, three fantastic albums. Y’know, and we put out a double album, but there was that whole outtake album, which is the best E Street Band album, ever — on Disc Two of Tracks — and now, they found another, whatever it is, eight or 10. . . and wait ’til you hear the quality of these things. La tournée de 140 dates de Bruce Springsteen &amp ; The E Street Band derrière The River a débuté le 3 octobre 1980 à la Crisler Arena d’Ann Arbor, Michigan, et s’est terminée le 14 septembre 1981 au Riverfront Coliseum de Cincinnati.
La tournée se déroule en quatre étapes – trois en Amérique du Nord et une en Europe – avec 34 spectacles, ce qui marque la première grande sortie de Springsteen à l’étranger.
La tournée River est la dernière à mettre en vedette la formation classique de 1975 à 1981 du E Street Band, composée de Springsteen, Steve Van Zandt, Clarence Clemons, Danny Federici, Gary Tallent, Roy Bittan et Max Weinberg.
Peu après la sortie du coffret The Ties That Bind, Bruce Springsteen &amp ; The E Street Band ont pris la route pour interpréter The River dans son intégralité. Entre le 16 janvier 2016 et le 25 février 2017, « The River Tour » a donné 89 concerts en quatre étapes, en Amérique du Nord, en Europe et en Océanie.

Bruce Springsteen vient de sortir « Don’t Play That Song », le troisième single et la vidéo de sa prochaine collection de reprises R&B, intitulée Only The Strong Survive.
Le nouvel ensemble, qui ne comprend pas le E Street Band, sortira vendredi (11 novembre).
« Don’t Play That Song » était à l’origine un single de 1962 du grand et regretté Ben E. King, qui a atteint la deuxième place du classement Billboard des singles R&B et la onzième place de la liste Hot 100 du magazine.
