Il y a 54 ans aujourd’hui – le 14 décembre 1968 – Marvin Gaye a remporté le plus grand succès de sa carrière lorsque “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” a atteint la première place et a entamé une série de sept semaines au sommet des hit-parades. La chanson avait été récemment classée numéro deux par Gladys Knight & ; The Pips, ses collègues du label Motown, dans une version plus enlevée.
Étonnamment, bien que “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” ait été le 24e succès de Marvin Gaye au Top 40 – et son septième Top 10 – il a marqué son tout premier succès au Billboard Hot 100.
“I Hard It Through The Grapevine” a été produit par Norman Whitfield qui a co-écrit la chanson avec Barrett Strong. Whitfield est également connu pour son travail avec les Temptations et d’autres groupes de la Motown, où il a coécrit et produit des tubes tels que “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg”, “I Can’t Get Next To You”, “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me),” (I Know) I’m Losing You “, ” Cloud Nine “, ” War “, ” Ball of Confusion (That’s What the World Is Today) “, ” Smiling Faces Sometimes ” et ” Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone “, entre autres.
La légende des Doobie Brothers, Michael McDonald, nous a dit qu’il ne voulait pas initialement enregistrer “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” pour sa collection de reprises de 2003 intitulée Motown : [“For instance, ‘Grapevine.’ One of the reasons I probably didn’t want to do it was I couldn’t imagine singing it any other way than how Marvin Gaye sang it. Because his ad-libbing of the melody has kind of become the melody to most of us. Marvin Gaye est revenu deux fois à la première place avant sa mort en 1984 – avec “Let’s Get It On” en 1973 et “Got To Give It Up (Pt. 1)” en 1977.
