Il y a 50 ans aujourd’hui (3 mars 1973), le sixième album d’Elton John, Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player, a atteint la première place du classement des 200 albums du Billboard. L’album, qui a conservé la première place pendant deux semaines, est resté dans le Top 10 pendant neuf semaines consécutives.
Le succès de l’album a été propulsé par la force de deux singles à succès massif – « Crocodile Rock » – un succès de trois semaines qui a marqué le premier succès d’Elton aux États-Unis et au Canada, ainsi que « Daniel », qui s’est hissé au deuxième rang du Hot 100 de Billboard et a atteint la première place du classement Easy Listening du magazine. Plusieurs chansons sont devenues des incontournables de la FM, notamment la chanson « Elderberry Wine ».

Le guitariste Davey Johnstone, qui a rejoint le groupe d’Elton John en 1971 et qui est actuellement son directeur musical, a eu la chance de voir de près le partenariat Elton John – Bernie Taupin pendant 50 ans et a littéralement vu certaines des chansons les plus appréciées du rock s’écrire devant lui : [“Elton’d have a stack of lyrics and he’d just look through them. He wouldn’t do any pre-work (on the songs) in those days, y’know, he wouldn’t ever sneak ‘em at home with them, he’d wait till he get to the studio, and then literally sit down after breakfast and write a song. Elton John a admis que son personnage extravagant – sur scène et en dehors – était souvent un masque pour son manque d’estime de soi : [“When I was drinking and doing drugs, you become completely ridiculous. I mean, you become self-obsessed, your values go completely out the window. Y’know, you don’t like the color of the wallpaper on the plane, or the way it’s done, you don’t like the color of the furniture in the hotel room — it’s all that absolute nonsense. Like all entertainers, they’re very comfortable on the stage, off the stage, I didn’t really. . . I was still the young boy from Pinner, who was just kinda insecure, a little overweight, and, y’know, had an inferiority complex. I just showed off on stage.
