En 2014, Al Green a été l’un des récipiendaires des Kennedy Center Honors du président Obama lors d’un gala au Kennedy Center de Washington. Earth, Wind, &amp ; Fire sur « I Can’t Get Next To You », « Love and Happiness,&#8221 ; et Jennifer Hudson sur « Simply Beautiful ». Usher a interprété « Let’s Stay Together », et Mavis Staples et Sam Moore se sont associés à une chorale pour chanter en duo « Take Me To The River ».
En 2008, Green a sorti Lay It Down, son troisième album depuis son retour à la musique profane en 2003 avec I Can&#8217T Stop, qui l’a réuni avec son collaborateur et producteur de longue date, feu Willie Mitchell. Green et Mitchell ont collaboré sur la plupart des plus grands succès de Green dans les années 70, tels que Let Stay Together et I Still In Love With You. En 2010, Take Me To The River, un classique de Green datant de 1974, a été intronisé au Grammy Hall of Fame.

Connu pour les tubes pop “Let’s Stay Together&#8221 ; et “I’m Still In Love With You,&#8221 ; entre autres, Green dit que la musique gospel est tout aussi importante pour lui, si ce n’est plus. Il explique la nécessité de faire de la musique gospel dans le monde d&#8217aujourd&#8217hui : [“Because I think the need for ‘a rose is still a rose’ mentality, and that pureness that comes out of gospel music is necessary for today to kind of curb all of the negative postures of music in reference to the language and various other videos that suggest very strongly this or that. Green reconnaît que certains de ses fans lui ont tourné le dos en 2003 lorsqu’il a recommencé à sortir de la musique profane. Il dit qu&#8217il ne peut pas s&#8217inquiéter du groupe restreint de fans qui ont un problème avec le fait qu&#8217il soit à la fois un artiste gospel et un artiste soul : [“You gotta be yourself. I can’t be nobody else. I have to be Al. I’m a gospel preacher, and I sing R&B rhythm and blues, and I sing gospel songs too. I’m just Al, and that’s all I really wanna be.
