Il y a 47 ans cette semaine (du 10 au 16 avril 1976), le cinquième album de Peter Frampton, la superproduction Frampton Comes Alive ! a atteint la première place du palmarès des albums du Billboard pendant 10 semaines non consécutives. L’album contient les tubes « Show Me The Way » (n° 6), « Baby I Love Your Way » (n° 12) et « Do You Feel Like We Do » (n° 10) – qui, étonnamment, sont toujours en rotation sur les radios de rock classique. En janvier 2001, pour son 25e anniversaire, Frampton a réédité une version remixée et augmentée de Frampton Comes Alive ! – comprenant quatre titres qui ne figuraient pas sur le double album original : « Nowhere’s Too Far (For My Baby) », « Just The Time Of Year », « White Sugar » et une interprétation radiophonique de « Day’s Dawning ».
Bien que Frampton Comes Alive – qui s’est vendu à ce jour à plus de huit millions d’exemplaires – ait pris Frampton et le monde du rock d’assaut, depuis qu’il a quitté Humble Pie en 1971, il a lentement fait des progrès substantiels dans sa carrière solo, centimètre par centimètre : [“My studio albums had a cult following (laughs), a small cult (laughs) to start with and building up to the Frampton record; the one in ’75, which included ‘Baby I Love Your Way’ and ‘Show Me The Way.’ And that one did sell a lot more — more than the other three put together — Wind Of Change, Frampton’s Camel, and Something’s Happening. Frampton nous a expliqué qu’à l’époque de Frampton Comes Alive, sa légendaire Gibson Les Paul noire était un cheval de bataille sur scène et que, contrairement à aujourd’hui – où, en raison des différents accordages, il peut passer par une demi-douzaine de guitares au cours d’un seul concert – la guitare devait supporter tout ce que Frampton lui jetait à la figure : [“We didn’t have more than one guitar in those days, y’know. If you wanted another guitar, you sold the one you had to get another one (laughs). So it was only. . . I think I had a white backup Les Paul — that was about it. And nobody really had backups of things — that was it. I think if there was different tuning for ‘Nowhere’s Too Far (For My Baby)’ I would do it before the number onstage by myself. Frampton nous a rappelé le moment précis où, en 1976, il a réalisé qu’il était la dernière méga-superstar du rock : [“A record signing in Detroit when the live album just came out. I had no bodyguards or anything like that, and just, y’know, a limo driver and me; that was it and we just go to this store. And they expected 150 people for me to sign Comes Alive when it’d just come out. Of course, it was pandemonium and the place, they had no secur. . . well, relatively no security there. And I remember having to fight to the limo — we had to abandon the signing because it got way out of control and there have got to be (laughs), I don’t know 5,000 people. Nous avons demandé à Peter Frampton de se souvenir du moment où l’album live est devenu presque plus grand que lui : [“The day that my manager called and said, ‘Guess what?’ I said, ‘Tell me.’ He said, ‘We’re Number One.’ I remember going to a party for ELO and Stanley Sheldon’s wife, Judy, just went over to me and said, ‘Peter, do you realize that everyone in this room is staring at you?’ This was something new and no one was paying attention to ELO, so obviously I went over to them and as I went over, it seemed like the whole room moved with me. L’ancien directeur du label de Frampton, Jerry Moss, cofondateur de A&M Records, s’est souvenu de la période post-Comes Alive ! comme du début de l’éparpillement de Frampton, de l’usure de son accueil par les fans et, en fin de compte, de l’effondrement de sa carrière : [“I think the year pretty much exhausted Peter. I think he worked so hard and did so many things; y’know, he wanted to remember the disc jockeys, he wanted to remember the press. Y’know, it’s a lot of emotion when you put on shows in front of 200,000 people, and he never took any time off — and I think it took it’s toll and he got pretty exhausted. Frampton nous a dit que le succès multiplatine de Frampton Comes Alive ! cinq ans seulement après le début de sa carrière solo, l’a mis à rude épreuve sur le plan artistique, et à un moment où il avait désespérément besoin de conseils sur la manière de gérer sa carrière, il n’en a trouvé nulle part : [“As (writer) Cameron Crowe put it, ‘It was like Peter was strapped to the nose-cone of a rocket, he went through the ceiling of the sky, got out, stood there and realized there was nobody else there at all. En 1995, Peter Frampton sort Frampton Comes Alive II. En 2011, il s’est lancé dans la tournée Frampton Comes Alive 35 ! qui a connu un énorme succès et au cours de laquelle il a interprété l’album classique dans son intégralité avant de jouer une autre série de morceaux plus récents.

John Regan, bassiste de Peter Frampton pendant plus de 30 ans, est décédé le 7 avril à l’âge de 71 ans. Regan, qui a joué et enregistré avec Frampton de 1979 à 2010, était également membre du Frehley’s Comet d’Ace Frehley. Il a eu une longue et brillante carrière, enregistrant et tournant avec des artistes tels que Mick Jagger, David Bowie, David Lee Roth, Billy Idol, Dave Edmunds, Bonnie Tyler, Robin Trower, John Waite, et bien d’autres encore.
Peter Frampton a publié un hommage sur les réseaux sociaux :
Il n’y a qu’une poignée de personnes, si ce n’est aucune, qui entrent dans votre monde et enrichissent vraiment votre vie. J’ai perdu l’un de mes amis les plus proches. Il a certainement enrichi ma vie grâce à la personne et au grand joueur qu’il était.
John Regan était le meilleur d’entre nous. Il faisait tout son possible pour aider les gens lorsque les choses n’allaient pas bien. Peu importe qui vous étiez, prince ou pauvre. Je sais que vous êtes nombreux à l’avoir connu. Il était l’ami de tous. Il a toujours été une source d’inspiration musicale et l’une des personnes les plus drôles de la planète.
