Il y a 54 ans dimanche (12 mars 1969), Paul McCartney et Linda Eastman se sont mariés à Londres. Le couple s’est rencontré en 1967 au Bag O’Nails, une boîte de nuit londonienne, alors que Linda, qui était déjà une photographe de rock réputée, était sortie pour la nuit avec les membres des Animals. Paul a tenu à se présenter à Linda et a ainsi jeté les bases d’une des relations les plus célèbres et les plus durables du rock n’ roll, qui s’est poursuivie jusqu’à la mort de Linda, le 17 avril 1998.
McCartney s’est souvenu que la nuit précédant le mariage, les tensions étaient vives entre lui et Linda : [“I’m not sure that there is a perfect marriage, but yeah, we did have a row, strangely enough. And it was like, ‘Oh, forget it! Let’s go get married.’”] (:07 OC : . . . va te marier)
Après avoir épousé Linda, Paul adopte légalement sa fille Heather, âgée de six ans, née de son précédent mariage, et le couple finit par élever trois autres enfants, Mary (née en 1969), Stella (née en 1971) et James (né en 1977).
Paul a déconcerté et même irrité ses fans lorsqu’il a formé son groupe solo Wings, et a insisté pour que Linda non seulement coécrive les chansons avec lui, mais apparaisse sur scène en chantant les voix principales et secondaires, et en jouant des claviers rudimentaires.
Selon McCartney, Linda a joué un rôle inestimable en l’incitant à continuer à faire de la musique après la séparation des Beatles : [“To have lost such a great job — and it was really the only job I’d ever had, besides being second man on a truck when I was a kid, and a paper route — it was quite a shock. Le cofondateur des Wings et batteur original Denny Seiwell nous a dit que Linda a toujours fait partie intégrante de la vie et de la musique de Paul, et qu’elle a été particulièrement importante pour lui après sa séparation d’avec les Beatles : [“They were such a couple. The two of them together, it was just totally inseparable, and I’m sure that he just had to have her there. Paul McCartney a expliqué que la présence de sa femme dans son groupe était pour lui une évidence : [“The thing is, we made a decision. It was kinda, y’know, we were in love, we wanted to be together. I think that was kind of like the central idea. And then it was like, ‘Oh, well if you’re going to be in the band than you’ll need to learn a bit of instrument.’ She played a little bit of piano — but not since she was a kid. Paul McCartney a épousé Heather Mills en 2002. Une fille, Beatrice Milly, est née en 2003. Le couple a divorcé en 2008 et Heather Mills a reçu 48,6 dollars de la part de Paul McCartney.
Le 9 octobre 2011, jour du 71e anniversaire de John Lennon, Paul McCartney se marie pour la troisième fois avec Nancy Shevell, sa petite amie depuis quatre ans, une mondaine new-yorkaise alors âgée de 51 ans.
